Where to Get Free Moving Boxes in Jacksonville (Plus What Boxes Actually Cost)

Moving across Jacksonville? Find usable free cartons, fill gaps with sturdy paid boxes, and check what new moving boxes cost before you buy.

If you're moving across Jacksonville — Southside to Mandarin, Riverside to the Beaches, or out toward Orange Park — boxes are one of the first costs that sneak up on you. Buying a full set new can chew through a Saturday morning and a chunk of your budget. Good news: Duval County gives away a lot of usable cartons if you know where to look, and you can fill gaps with a few paid boxes when you need something sturdy and uniform.

I'm Jawad, owner of 1st Choice Movers. We see every kind of packing setup on move day. Here's the practical playbook we share with customers who want to spend less on materials without risking a broken dish halfway down the stairs.

Free (and nearly free) box sources around Jacksonville

Craigslist Free Stuff. Search Jacksonville Craigslist for "moving boxes" in the free section. Listings pop up in Arlington, Oakleaf, and elsewhere, then disappear fast — check a couple times a week once your move date is set.

Facebook Marketplace + Buy Nothing / neighborhood groups. Local Buy Nothing groups and Jacksonville buy/sell/trade communities regularly post flattened stacks after someone's already unpacked. Post an Ask with your ZIP, how many you need, and when you can pick up. Meet in a public place when you can.

Liquor and wine stores. Sturdy bottle boxes (especially ones with dividers) are excellent for glassware. Call ahead — many Jax liquor shops get deliveries early in the week and will set clean cartons aside if you ask politely and show up when you say you will. Ask the manager; don't invent a dumpster route.

Grocery receiving days. Chain and independent markets break down cartons daily. Ask a manager if they'll hold clean, dry boxes for you after a truck day. Skip anything damp or food-stained.

Apartment leasing offices & complex recycling rooms. Complexes from Southside to Jacksonville Beach see constant turnover. Ask leasing whether residents leave usable boxes in a designated spot — many will point you the right way if you ask first.

U-Haul Take-A-Box Leave-A-Box. Company-owned U-Haul centers often have a reuse bin near the front. Ask an associate; stock varies by day. You can also check U-Haul's online Box Exchange for peer giveaways.

Recycling centers — call first. Some North Florida recycling facilities may allow reuse of clean cardboard; others treat anything in the stream as finished. Call before you drive. Do not pull cardboard out of a locked or posted dumpster.

What new boxes cost (national snapshot)

When free boxes run short — or you need matching sizes for books and kitchen — here’s how the big retailers compared on Oct 28, 2026 (America/Denver):

Prices below are national / online list prices captured on Oct 28, 2026 (America/Denver). Retail prices change often and can differ by zip code, store, dealer vs. corporate location, and promotions. Always verify the live price at checkout (or in-store) before sharing or quoting a number to customers. Sources: uhaul.com, homedepot.com, lowes.com snippets, amazon.com — researched Oct 28, 2026 (America/Denver). Lowe’s medium/XL and some HD multi-packs need a live product-page or in-store re-check before you buy. U-Haul dealer stores may price higher than corporate online list.

Free / nearly free from retailers: U-Haul’s Take-A-Box Leave-A-Box bins and online Box Exchange are still active (U-Haul tip article updated May 6, 2026 — ask your local center). Unused new boxes: U-Haul and Home Depot both advertise buy-back / unused returns with receipt.

Wardrobe boxes and specialty dish packs cost more than the small/medium/large set above. If you're only buying a few "hero" boxes for heavy books or hanging clothes, that's often the smartest spend — then return unused new cartons with your receipt where the store allows it.

How we pack when materials are mixed

Free boxes are fine for linens, toys, and closet clutter. Use new or clearly stronger cartons for books, tools, and kitchenware. Label every box on two sides and the top with the room name. Keep a first-night box (chargers, meds, sheets, coffee) that rides with you, not buried in the truck.

For Beaches and Riverside apartments, confirm elevator reservations and loading rules early so your free-box haul doesn't turn into a hallway scramble.

Boxes to skip (even if they're free)

Not every free carton is move-day ready. Pass on:

  • Produce boxes that smell like fruit or show moisture stains — they weaken under weight and can attract pests.
  • Open-top liquor trays with no bottom flaps — fine for carrying bottles to a car, terrible for stacking in a truck.
  • Cartons with grease, soft corners, torn handholds, or anything that lived in a damp garage.
  • Banana boxes with large cutouts — small items fall through; reinforce or skip.
  • Anything with chemical, paint, or oil residue.

A good used box is clean, dry, closes fully, and still feels solid when you press the sides.
